Abstract
Although there had been many suggestive evidences for scrub typhus in Korea, the fist case form Korean resident was confirmed by clinically and serologically in 1986, and microbiologically in 1987. The outbreak of scrub typhus has occurred every
autumn
showing that scrub typhus is one of the main communicable diseases to be urgently controlled in Korea. The scrub typhus is now officially designated as class¥±major communicable disease in Korea.
For the epidemiological study of the scrub typhus in Korea, we collected 3,453 sera from the patients with acute febrile diseases who visited 20 collaborative hospitals located throughout the country in 1994. Those sera were tested for the
antibody
to
R. tsutsugamushi by passive haemagglutination test and epidemiological analysis including sex, age, seasonal and regional distributions of seropositive cases were performed.
@ES The results were summarized as follows;
@EN 1. Seropositive rate of scrub typhus among the patients with acute febrile episodes were 34.3%.
2. Among the seropositives, female outnumbered male.
3. More than 90% of the seropositives were older than twenties.
4. The number of seropositives increased from October, peaked at November, and sharply decreased in December.
5. The seropositive cases were found all over the country including Cheju island in Korea.
